Why Chinese near-synonyms are not interchangeable
Chinese kept a large classical vocabulary alongside the words that grew out of it, so two words often mean the same thing and are still not interchangeable: one belongs to speech, the other to writing, or one is neutral and the other carries an old flavour. Seeing them side by side is how you notice that they are not the same word at all.
This page lists the most frequent dictionary headwords that belong to at least one thesaurus group, and prints that group in full. It is not a catalogue of every synonym in the table: that table is far larger than a browseable page can carry, and most of its headwords are too rare to be the place a learner should start.
