What a real Chinese name is made of

A Chinese name is short and strictly ordered: the family name first, one syllable in almost every case, then a given name of one or two characters. There are only a few hundred family names in common use, and a handful of them cover a very large share of the population, which is why the given name carries nearly all the individuality.

That given name is chosen rather than picked from a list. Parents look for characters that mean something they wish for the child, that sound well against the family name, and that balance it visually when written. There is no fixed stock of first names as in Europe: a given name is a small composition, and two people with the same one is a coincidence rather than a convention.

This is why a real Chinese name is not a translation of yours and does not sound like it. It is a name you are given, in the way a Chinese teacher gives one to a foreign student on the first day of class, and it is what you would write on a form, a business card or a thesis in China. If you want your own name recognisably rendered instead, the transliteration tool is the one you want.
