How Chinese is actually typed

There is no keyboard with thousands of keys, and there never was. Chinese is typed by sound: you write the pronunciation in pinyin, the software offers the characters that match, and you pick the one you mean. That is what an input method editor is, and it is what every Chinese speaker uses on every device.

The step that surprises newcomers is the choosing. Because so many characters share a pronunciation, the list of candidates is part of the process rather than a failure of it, and typing whole words rather than single syllables narrows it dramatically. Type shi and you get a long list; type shijie and the first candidate is almost certainly the one you want.

This editor runs in the browser, needs no installation and no system language pack, which makes it useful on a machine that is not yours, on a shared computer, or simply to write a few characters without changing your keyboard settings. The text it produces is ordinary Unicode and can be pasted anywhere.
