Reading a real text before you can read a real text
The gap between the last exercise of a textbook and the first article of a newspaper is the point where most learners stop. The vocabulary is suddenly unbounded, and looking up every unknown word one at a time is so slow that the sentence has evaporated by the time you reach its end.
Annotation closes that gap. Paste a Chinese text and it comes back with each word separated, its pronunciation above it and its meaning beside it, so you can read the whole thing at something like reading speed and only stop where it matters. Word segmentation is the hard part and the useful part: Chinese is written without spaces, and knowing where one word ends is half of understanding the sentence.
It works on anything: a news article, a song, a message from a friend, a menu photographed and typed out. For a longer text, or when you want a translation rather than a gloss, the translator is the neighbouring tool.
