Thai script, and the tones hidden in the spelling
Thai is written in a script descended from Khmer, itself descended from an Indian model, and it has a feature that makes transliteration interesting: the tone of a syllable is not written with a mark alone but follows from the class of its initial consonant, the type of its vowel and the presence of a final. Thai has three classes of consonants for that reason, with several letters for what an outsider hears as the same sound.
Thai also runs its words together, without spaces between them, using spaces where a European language would use punctuation. A name written in Thai is therefore a continuous string, and a Thai reader separates it by knowing the language rather than by looking at gaps.
The transliteration writes your name with Thai letters, chosen so that a Thai speaker reading them aloud says something close to it. As with every script here, the result is your name in another writing system, not a Thai name.
