Compatibility in the traditional scheme
The twelve animals of the Chinese cycle are traditionally grouped in ways that have a geometry rather than a psychology behind them. Four sets of three, each spaced evenly around the circle of twelve, are held to go well together; each animal is also held to clash with the one directly opposite it, six places away. The pattern is the same one that organises the twelve earthly branches in the calendar, and it long predates its use for matching people.
Chinese almanacs have carried these correspondences for centuries, and they still appear at weddings and around the New Year, in the way that horoscopes appear in a Western newspaper: widely known, variably believed, and part of the furniture of the culture.
