Why a Chinese thesaurus is not quite an English one
Chinese has an unusual abundance of near-synonyms, and the reason is historical: the modern language kept a large classical vocabulary alongside the words that grew out of it. Very often two words mean the same thing and are not interchangeable, because one belongs to speech and the other to writing, or one is neutral and the other carries an old flavour. Choosing between them is most of what style means in Chinese.
That is what a thesaurus is for here, more than for finding a word you have forgotten. Seeing four words for the same idea side by side, each with its own definition, is the fastest way to notice that they are not the same word at all.
Each entry links through to the dictionary, where you will find the pronunciation, the full definition and example sentences. That is usually the next step: the thesaurus tells you which words are candidates, the dictionary tells you which one belongs in your sentence.
