Hangul, the alphabet that was designed
Korean is written in hangul, and hangul is unusual among the writing systems of the world: it was not inherited or adapted, it was designed, promulgated in the fifteenth century under King Sejong for the explicit purpose of being learnable by everyone. The letters are not arbitrary shapes. Consonants picture the position of the mouth that produces them, and related sounds share a shape with a stroke added.
The letters are then grouped into syllable blocks rather than written in a row, which is why Korean looks at first like a system of characters and is in fact an alphabet. Each block is one syllable, read left to right and top to bottom inside itself.
Transliterating a foreign name means fitting it to Korean sounds, which brings the usual adjustments: sounds that Korean does not distinguish are merged, and consonant clusters gain a vowel. What comes out is your name as it is said in Korean, written in the alphabet a Korean reader uses every day.
