What this exercise is for
The words that carry Chinese grammar cannot be translated one by one. `了` does not mean "past", `的` does not mean "of", and `就` means nothing at all outside a sentence: they are known by the place they occupy and the work they do there.
This exercise takes one word out of a sentence and tells you what it means. Your job is to find which of the four belongs there — usually a particle, a negation or an adverb, which is precisely what a dictionary is not enough to teach.
The sentences are the ones from the dialogues in the site's lessons, the same as in the word-order game. Every one was said by somebody in an ordinary situation; none was written for this game.
