What a beginner actually has to learn first

Chinese has a reputation for difficulty that is only half deserved, and knowing which half saves months. The grammar is genuinely simple: no verb conjugation, no gendered nouns, no plurals, no agreement, no cases. A verb has one form, whoever does it and whenever it happens. Word order and a handful of small particles carry what other languages carry with endings.

The difficulty is in three other places. The tones, which are part of a word rather than an intonation, and which have to be learned with the word from the first day rather than added later. The writing system, which is unrelated to the sound and takes sustained time. And the vocabulary, which shares almost nothing with European languages, so there are no free words to fall back on.

That shapes what a first course should do, and it is what these lessons do: spoken situations first, with audio, so that the tones are learned by ear along with the words rather than from a table. Reading and writing come in alongside, at their own pace. Each lesson is a short dialogue on an everyday situation, with the Chinese text, the pinyin, the translation and the recording.
