Year of the Fire Goat

A Fire Goat year — 丁未 (Dīng Wèi) — is the forty-fourth pair in the Chinese sixty-year cycle. Animal and element return together only once every sixty years. The pairing last fell in 1967, and before that in 1907. The next runs from 6 February 2027 to 25 January 2028; the one after that is 2087.

In the tradition the goat stands for peace, gentleness, creativity, elegance and a household that holds together. The Fire of a Ding Wei year is Yin Fire: a candle flame, not a blaze. After a Fire Horse year, which the almanacs read as fast and sometimes chaotic, the tempo drops. What was launched in a hurry is supposed to be given a lasting shape.

Goat, sheep or ram?

The character 羊 (yáng) that names the eighth sign does not cut as English does. It covers the whole of the sheep and goat family — the character page shows the pictogram, a head seen face on. The same year is therefore called the Year of the Goat (山羊 shānyáng, “mountain goat”), the usual name in the south of China and in Vietnam; the Year of the Sheep (绵羊 miányáng), preferred in the north of China, in Mongolia, Korea and Japan; and the Year of the Ram, a rendering some writers keep for the solar, masculine side of the character. The three names are one sign. In Chinese sources a Fire year of this animal is also a Red Goat year (红羊 hóng yáng): red is the colour of Fire.

A stubborn saying holds that children born in a goat year have a hard fate — “of ten goats, nine are incomplete” — and births drop in those years, as they did in 2015, the opposite of Dragon years, which are sought.

Personality

People born under the Fire Goat are described with a few marked traits:

• Overflowing creativity: a pronounced artistic gift and a sharp eye for beauty
• Deep empathy: they pick up other people’s feelings at once and know how to ease tension
• Expressive charm: less shy than other Goats, they win people over by warmth and a contagious enthusiasm

Professionals are said to advance more by collaboration than by competition. The support of mentors and of “noble people” (贵人 guìrén) remains decisive, but it is won this year by reliability and loyalty rather than by daring.

Finances and prosperity

The Fire Goat is said to bring a regular prosperity rather than a spectacular one. A year of careful management and patient capital: long-term investments, putting accounts in order and paying down debt are held to be more profitable than aggressive bets. March and September call for particular watchfulness against impulsive decisions, and an expansion that is too fast in the first half of the year risks being paid for at the end of it.

Love and relationships

In love the Fire Goat looks for tenderness, beauty and emotional safety. The closest ties are with:

• Rabbit and Pig: with the Goat they form the wood trinity of affinity (亥卯未), one of the most harmonious alliances in Chinese astrology
• Horse: the Goat’s “secret friend” by the union of the six harmonies (午未), bringing the drive the partner sometimes lacks
• Dragon, Snake and Dog: easy relations, carried by a natural affinity with the year’s Fire

Relations with Ox are the most trying: Ox stands in direct clash with the Goat (丑未冲) and enters fan tai sui, which can shake habits, housing and ties. Rat (子未相害) and Rooster also have to make an effort of mutual understanding.

Health

A year turned inward taxes the mind and the emotions above all. The usual advice is to:

• Guard against emotional fatigue and watch the nervous system
• Spare the heart and the circulation, the organs associated with the Fire element
• Look after digestion: the Goat is an Earth branch (spleen and stomach)
• Protect against overwork in June and July, the energetic peaks of the year
• Keep to gentle, regular activity: walking, qigong, yoga, meditation

Lucky colours and numbers for 2027

Favourable colours

• Salmon orange: the emblematic colour of the year, which strengthens Yin Fire
• Red and pink: for protection and vitality, especially for those born under the Goat
• Gold, ochre and terracotta: to anchor prosperity in the Goat’s Earth
• Green and violet: the sign’s traditional colours, held to favour creativity
• Pearl grey: a colour of balance, associated with Metal, to temper excess

Black and very dark blues, the colours of Water, are said to work against the year’s Fire.

Lucky numbers

The numbers 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 are held to be particularly favourable in 2027: 2, 5 and 8 for Earth, 9 for Fire, 3 and 7 as the Goat’s traditional figures. They are the ones named for important decisions or investments.

The character, and the stories

羊 sits inside 祥 (xiáng, auspicious), 美 (měi, beautiful) and 善 (shàn, good). Three well-known stories go with it.

The legend of the Five Rams (五羊): five immortals rode down on rams of different colours and gave rice ears to the starving people of Canton. The city kept the name 羊城 (Yángchéng), “city of the rams”.

The New Year wish 三羊开泰 (sān yáng kāi tài), “three rams open prosperity”: a pun on the Yijing’s three yang lines that open the hexagram of Prosperity and announce spring, which is why three sheep appear on New Year prints.

Su Wu tending sheep (苏武牧羊): the Han envoy, held nineteen years among the Xiongnu, refused to turn and became the figure of loyalty.

The Red Goat calamity

An old reading, the “calamity of the Red Horse and the Red Goat” (赤马红羊劫), held that the years bǐngwǔ (2026) and dīngwèi (2027) bring trouble. It is attributed to Zhang Jixian, thirtieth Celestial Master of the Zhengyi Taoist line, and was set out under the Song by the scholar Chai Wang, whose Bing-Ding Almanac in ten volumes listed twenty-one of these cycles across more than 1,200 years.

Historians note that the prophecy has rarely been borne out: it is a retrospective reading, keeping the years that fit. The last two Fire Goat years are remembered at least as much for what was made in them: 1907, the year of Les Demoiselles d’Avignon; 1967, the Summer of Love.

One’s own animal year

People born in 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2015 keep their ben ming nian (本命年) in 2027, the year of their own animal. Custom is to wear red through that year — a thread, a belt, a garment — against Tai Sui, the Grand Duke Jupiter, whom one is said to disturb during one’s own cycle. Some add a Horse charm, the Goat’s ally in the six harmonies. The same red underwear appears among the New Year gifts.

To make the most of the Fire Goat’s energy in 2027:
