Court or mediation

The firm doing Auntie Wang's building work is four months late. She wants to go to court; she is told what mediation is.

What you learn to do

  • setting out a dispute and your evidence
  • comparing two forms of redress
  • anticipating a refusal by the other side
  • telling compensation from satisfaction

Language points

有理, to have right on your side

您有理 does not mean "you are right" in the sense of a correct opinion, but that the law and common sense are on your side in a dispute. It is the word used in a neighbours' quarrel as before a court, and its opposite 没理 accuses. 讲道理, later in the dialogue, belongs to the same family.

出气

To let out the breath you have been holding: to get relief, to work off your anger. 出这口气 names very precisely the need for moral redress, distinct from compensation. Zhang sets the two against each other in the last line, and the opposition exists only in Chinese: English has to rebuild it with two unrelated verbs.

一回事

不是一回事 means "those are not two instances of the same thing". The word 回 counts occurrences of an event, and the expression serves to separate two notions that were being run together. You also hear it affirmatively, 是一回事, to say the distinction offered is no distinction at all.
