Points on your licence

Chen Hao is pulled over for crossing a line. He has three points left, and one way of earning some back.

What you learn to do

  • understanding what you are being accused of
  • handing over your documents
  • asking about points and the fine
  • learning how to get points back
  1. The traffic officer

    师傅前面路口一下

Shī fu, qǐng zài qiánmiàn de lù kǒu kào bian tíng yīxià chē.

Shifu, please pull over at the junction ahead.

  2. Chen Hao

    请问哪儿一直

Hǎo de. Qǐngwèn wǒ shì nǎr zuò cuò le ? Wǒ yīzhí kāi de hěn màn.

Certainly. May I ask what I did wrong? I have been driving slowly the whole way.

  3. The traffic officer

    前面路口线

Qiánmiàn nà gè lù kǒu, nǐ de chē yā le xiàn.

At the junction back there, your car crossed the line.

  4. Chen Hao

    看见那儿线

Wǒ zhēn méi kànjiàn. Nàr de xiàn tài qiǎn le.

I honestly did not see it. The markings there are very faint.

  5. The traffic officer

    驾照

Qǐng bǎ jià zhào gěi wǒ.

    Let me have your licence.

  6. Chen Hao

Gěi nín. Zhè gè yào kòu fēn ma ?

Here you are. Does this take points off?

  7. The traffic officer

    两百规定线一样

Kòu sān fēn, fá liǎngbǎi. Zhè shì guīdìng, shéi yā xiàn dōu yīyàng.

Three points and a two hundred yuan fine. Those are the rules, they are the same for anyone who crosses a line.

  8. Chen Hao

    今年已经

Wǒ jīnnián yǐjīng bèi kòu guò liù fēn le.

I have already had six points taken off this year.

  9. The traffic officer

    重新

Nà nǐ hái shèng sān fēn. Zài bèi kòu wán, jiù yào chóngxīn kǎo.

Then you have three left. Lose those and you will have to sit the test again.

  10. Chen Hao

    小心办法回来

Nà wǒ de xiǎoxīn le. Yǒu bànfǎ bǎ fēn bǔ huílai ma ?

I had better be careful then. Is there any way of earning points back?

  11. The traffic officer

    网上学习最多

Yǒu. Wǎngshàng yǒu xuéxí de kè, xué wán kǎo guò, yī nián zuìduō jiā liù fēn.

There is. There is a course online: complete it, pass the test, and you can add up to six points a year.

  12. Chen Hao

    今天晚上明天

Hǎo, wǒ jīntiān wǎnshang jiù bǎ kè xué wán, míngtiān kǎo.

Right, I will finish the course tonight and sit the test tomorrow.

  13. The traffic officer

    罚款手机可以十五以内

The fine can be paid on your phone, within fifteen days.

Language points

被扣过: the passive of experience

已经被扣过六分了: I have already had six points taken off. The 过 marks an experience undergone at least once, and it combines with the passive without difficulty. The sentence says neither when nor by whom, only that it happened and that its effect remains, which the final 了 confirms.

补回来: to make up what is missing

把分补回来: to get the points back. 补 means to make good a shortfall, and 回来 says the thing comes back from where it went. The same pair serves for making up a day's work, a missed lesson, lost money. Here only the complement separates "to add" from "to recover".

Twelve points a year, and a test to earn some back

A Chinese licence carries twelve points, restored each year. At zero, the driver retakes the theory test before getting the licence back. For some years now an online course followed by a test has allowed drivers to recover up to six points a year, which explains Chen Hao's question and the officer's answer.
