The quote and the invoice

The quote for Xiaoyu's work has grown by five thousand yuan. She asks for the breakdown, then for the invoice.

What you learn to do

  • challenging the gap between two quotes
  • asking for a line-by-line breakdown
  • finding out whether a price includes tax
  • agreeing when the invoice is issued
  1. The tradesman

Xiǎoyǔ, bào jià wǒ fā gěi nǐ le, kàn le ma ?

Xiaoyu, I have sent you the quote, have you looked at it?

  2. Xiaoyu

I have. Thirty-two thousand in all, five thousand more than we said last time.

  3. The tradesman

Duō de shì cáiliào. Shàng cì zhǐ suàn le rén gōng.

The extra is materials. Last time I only counted labour.

  4. Xiaoyu

Bào jià shàng xiě zhe cáiliào yī xiàng, kěshì méiyǒu míng xì.

The quote has a line for materials, but no breakdown.

  5. The tradesman

Wǒ kěyǐ bǎ měi yàng cáiliào de jià xiě qīngchu.

I can write out the price of each material clearly.

  6. Xiaoyu

Máfan nín xiě. Chúle jiàgé yǐwài, wǒ hái xiǎng zhīdào páizi.

Please do. As well as the prices, I would like to know the brands.

  7. The tradesman

Hǎo, páizi wǒ yě xiě shàng.

Right, I will put the brands in as well.

  8. Xiaoyu

    还有

Háiyǒu, zhè gè jià hán shuì ma ?

One more thing: does this price include tax?

  9. The tradesman

Bù hán. Yào fā piào de huà, zài jiā bǎifēnzhī liù.

It does not. If you want an official invoice, add six per cent.

  10. Xiaoyu

Wǒ yào fā piào. Fángzi shì gōngsī zū de.

I do want one. The flat is rented by my company.

  11. The tradesman

Nà wǒ chóngxīn zuò yī fèn bào jià, míngtiān gěi nǐ.

Then I will redo the quote and give it to you tomorrow.

  12. Xiaoyu

Xièxie. Wán gōng yǐhòu, fā piào shénme shíhou néng kāi ?

Thank you. Once the work is finished, when can the invoice be issued?

  13. The tradesman

You settle the balance and I will issue it the same day.

Language points

开发票: the fapiao is not an ordinary invoice

The 发票 is a tax document printed on an official form, the only receipt a company can put through its books. The verb that goes with it is 开, "to open, to make out", never 写 or 给. Many small tradesmen charge six per cent extra to issue one, since they then declare the income: that is what line 9 says, and it is negotiated before the work, not after.

含 means "to contain": 含税 is said of a price including tax, 不含税 of one excluding it. The question 含税吗 is asked as a matter of course in China in front of a quote, because the default answer, for a tradesman, is no. Anyone who assumes otherwise finds out the difference at the last line.

一份, the measure word for documents

份 counts copies of documents, portions and jobs: 一份合同, 一份工作, 一份饭. It is not confused with 张, which counts sheets of paper as flat objects. The quote is therefore counted in 份, the sheet it is written on in 张.
