2028, Year of the Earth Monkey
Chinese horoscope 2028
Year of the Earth Monkey
According to Chinese astrology, is the Year of the Earth Monkey (traditionally, the year 4726) which will begin January 26, 2028 in line with the Chinese New Year and end the evening of February 12, 2029, giving way to the Earth Rooster zodiac sign.
The Monkey Sign : The always charming, super-energized Monkey is the partier of the Chinese Zodiac. Monkeys have an insatiable appetite for fun and activity. Having a good time comes very easily for them in any crowd. They are optimistic, witty and blessed with a razor sharp mind. While Monkeys love to be the center of attention, they are good listeners as well. Their bottomless curiosity ensures they will be knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics. Their intelligence allows them to address complex tasks and situations with ease. Monkeys are show-offs who love nothing more than to bedazzle those around them with their antics.
Most Monkeys do not have a highly developed sense of morality. Indeed, if its fun, they’ll do it. Their primary goal is the pursuit of their own pleasure. Monkeys make pleasurable, exhilarating lovers, but beware of the possibility they will stray. Monkeys will try anything once, and if it is the slightest bit entertaining are sure to try it again.
The Monkey’s self-serving attitude may be trouble for many other Signs of the Zodiac. They are very hedonistic and lacking in self-control. If they cannot find a party they will start their own.

The cyclical pair of the year
戊申 wùshēn — position 45 of the sixty-year cycle.
Stem 戊 wù — Agent: Earth; Polarity: yáng. This stem is where the element given above comes from.
Branch 申 shēn — Animal: Monkey; Double hour: 3 pm – 5 pm; Month: 7th (August); Direction: west-southwest; Season: autumn; Fixed agent: Metal.
The opening of autumn and the first of the two metal positions.
Some almanacs give a different element: they follow the nàyīn 纳音 table, which assigns one to the whole pair rather than to the stem alone.
The same pair only comes back every sixty years: the previous occurrence is 1968, the next 2088.
The twelve earthly branches
The sign is the branch; the animal is the picture given to it so that it could be remembered. Each of the twelve also carries a double hour, a month of the traditional year, a direction, a season and an agent.
| Branch | Animal | Double hour | Month | Direction | Season | Fixed agent | What it stands for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 子 zǐ | Rat | 11 pm – 1 am | 11th (December) | north | winter | Water | The branch that opens the cycle: its double hour straddles midnight, its month holds the winter solstice, and its direction is due north. |
| 丑 chǒu | Ox | 1 am – 3 am | 12th (January) | north-northeast | winter | Earth | The last month of the traditional year. Like the three other earth branches, it closes a season instead of opening one. |
| 寅 yín | Tiger | 3 am – 5 am | 1st (February) | east-northeast | spring | Wood | The first month of the traditional year. It is at its opening, at the beginning of spring, that the divination arts turn the year over — not at the New Year. |
| 卯 mǎo | Rabbit | 5 am – 7 am | 2nd (March) | east | spring | Wood | Mid-spring and due east, where the sun rises; its month holds the spring equinox. |
| 辰 chén | Dragon | 7 am – 9 am | 3rd (April) | east-southeast | spring | Earth | The earth branch that closes spring, and the only one of the twelve whose animal does not exist. |
| 巳 sì | Snake | 9 am – 11 am | 4th (May) | south-southeast | summer | Fire | The opening of summer and the first of the two fire positions; late morning. |
| 午 wǔ | Horse | 11 am – 1 pm | 5th (June) | south | summer | Fire | Noon, due south and the heart of summer: the position exactly opposite the rat, six notches away. |
| 未 wèi | Goat | 1 pm – 3 pm | 6th (July) | south-southwest | summer | Earth | The earth branch that closes summer, in early afternoon. |
| 申 shēn | Monkey | 3 pm – 5 pm | 7th (August) | west-southwest | autumn | Metal | The opening of autumn and the first of the two metal positions. |
| 酉 yǒu | Rooster | 5 pm – 7 pm | 8th (September) | west | autumn | Metal | Mid-autumn and due west, where the sun sets; its month holds the autumn equinox. |
| 戌 xū | Dog | 7 pm – 9 pm | 9th (October) | west-northwest | autumn | Earth | The earth branch that closes autumn, at nightfall. |
| 亥 hài | Pig | 9 pm – 11 pm | 10th (November) | north-northwest | winter | Water | The last slot of the cycle, at the opening of winter; the double hour before midnight. |
The five agents
The ten stems are shared out two by two among the five agents: the first of each pair is called yáng 阳, the second yīn 阴. That is why one agent holds the year twice in a row and comes back every ten years — and why the same animal only meets the same element again after sixty.
| Agent | Stems | Season | Direction | Colour | Begets | Overcomes | What it stands for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 木 mù Wood | jiǎ 甲 and yǐ 乙 | spring | east | green | Fire | Earth | The movement that pushes and spreads, what bends and straightens. Water begets it and it begets fire; it draws on earth, and metal cuts it. |
| 火 huǒ Fire | bǐng 丙 and dīng 丁 | summer | south | red | Earth | Metal | Heat that rises, and what burns. Wood begets it and it begets earth; it melts metal, and water puts it out. |
| 土 tǔ Earth | wù 戊 and jǐ 己 | the end of every season | centre | yellow | Metal | Water | What carries, yields and transforms — what can be sown and reaped. Fire begets it and it begets metal; it soaks up water, and wood draws on it. |
| 金 jīn Metal | gēng 庚 and xīn 辛 | autumn | west | white | Water | Wood | What is cast and what cuts. Earth begets it and it begets water; it cuts wood, and fire melts it. |
| 水 shuǐ Water | rén 壬 and guǐ 癸 | winter | north | black | Wood | Fire | What moistens and flows down. Metal begets it and it begets wood; it puts out fire, and earth soaks it up. |
The ten heavenly stems

Where the twelve animals come from
The cycle of twelve animals is old and its origin is unclear, but its structure is not: it is one half of a system of sixty, formed by pairing twelve earthly branches with ten heavenly stems. The animals are the popular face of the branches, and the full sixty-year cycle is what traditional dates are counted in. This is why a year is not simply the year of the horse but the year of a particular horse, one of five, each associated with one of the five elements.
The year runs from Chinese New Year rather than from the first of January, which catches out a great many people born in January or February: they belong to the previous animal, not the one their Western birth year suggests.
The animals are woven deeply into the culture, in language, in art and in the New Year celebrations, quite apart from what anyone believes about them. This tool tells you which animal and which element your date of birth falls under, and what the tradition associates with them. It is offered as cultural information.
