Birth of Duan Qirui
Duan Qirui is born on 6 March 1865 in Hefei, Anhui. A commander of the Beiyang Army and one of the most powerful men in China from 1916 to 1920, he serves as provisional chief executive of the Republic of China in Beijing from 24 November 1924 to 20 April 1926; his reputation remains marked by his alliance with Japan and by the "March 18 massacre" of 1926. He dies on 2 November 1936.

Writer Wang Anyi is born on 6 March 1954 in Nanjing. An author of adult fiction and children's literature, she sets most of her work in Shanghai, where she lives and works, and also writes about the Anhui countryside to which she was "sent down" during the Cultural Revolution; translated into English, German and French, she receives the Mao Dun Literary Prize in 2000.

Death of Lu Guangqi
Lu Guangqi, who briefly served as chancellor of the Tang dynasty from 901 to 902 while Emperor Zhaozong was under the control of the warlord Li Maozhen, is forced to commit suicide on 6 March 903, after Li Maozhen surrenders the emperor to the rival warlord Zhu Quanzhong.

Freestyle swimmer Ning Zetao is born on 6 March 1993 in Zhengzhou. At the 2014 Asian Games he wins the 50 m, the 100 m and the 4 x 100 m freestyle and mixed relays, setting a new Asian record over 100 m, then in Kazan in 2015 becomes the first Chinese swimmer to win the world title in the 100 m freestyle.
