    Death of Mao Zedong

    Mao Zedong dies in Beijing on 9 September 1976. One of the founding members of the Chinese Communist Party, established in Shanghai in 1921, he founded the People's Republic of China and remained its paramount leader from 1949 until his death.

    Japan's formal surrender to China

    On 9 September 1945, the Empire of Japan formally surrenders to the Republic of China. The ceremony closes eight years of open war, known in China as the War of Resistance Against Japan, which began in 1937 after years of fighting confined to Manchuria.

    Yelü Dashi wins the Battle of Qatwan

    On 9 September 1141, Yelü Dashi defeats the Seljuk and Kara-Khanid armies at the Battle of Qatwan. A member of the Liao imperial clan, he had fled northern China as the Jurchen destroyed the dynasty and founded the Western Liao empire in Central Asia.

    Death of the Chenghua Emperor

    The Chenghua Emperor, ninth ruler of the Ming dynasty, dies on 9 September 1487 after a reign of twenty-three years. Removed from the line of succession as a child, while his father was a Mongol captive, he was only reinstated as heir in 1457.

    Birth of Lu Rongting

    General Lu Rongting is born on 9 September 1859. A warlord of Zhuang ethnicity, he was one of the leaders of the Old Guangxi clique.

    General Yang Baibing is born on 9 September 1920. A senior political commissar in the People's Liberation Army, he and his half-brother Yang Shangkun effectively controlled the army from the early 1980s to the early 1990s.

    Mathematician Feng Kang is born on 9 September 1920. Elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980, he gave his name to the prize created in 1994 for young researchers in computational mathematics.

    Actress Ouyang Sha-fei is born on 9 September 1924. She moved from the Shanghai film industry to Hong Kong in 1950, appeared in more than 250 films and won the 1967 Golden Horse Award for Best Supporting Actress.

    Singer Uudam, of Mongol ethnicity, is born on 9 September 1999. A former member of the Hulunbuir Children's Choir, he rose to fame on the 2011 season of China's Got Talent.
