Signing of the Boxer Protocol
The Boxer Protocol is signed on 7 September 1901 between the Qing dynasty and the Eight-Nation Alliance, bringing the Boxer Rebellion to a close. Negotiated by Li Hongzhang on behalf of the Guangxu Emperor, the unequal treaty imposed a heavy war indemnity and further concessions on China.

Autumn Harvest Uprising
The Autumn Harvest Uprising, led by Mao Zedong in Hunan and Jiangxi provinces, breaks out on 7 September 1927. Together with the Shanghai massacre and the Nanchang uprising, it marks the start of the Chinese Civil War.

Death of Sima Yi
General and statesman Sima Yi dies on 7 September 251. Regent of the state of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period, he had made his name repelling Shu and Wu incursions and conquering the Liaodong commandery.

Death of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang
Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, born Li Chen, reigns from 846 until his death on 7 September 859. By curbing the power of the eunuchs and easing external threats, he gives the Tang dynasty a final spell of stable government.

Birth of Liu Mingchuan
Liu Mingchuan is born in Hefei, Anhui, on 7 September 1836. A Qing officer of the Huai Army, he repelled French forces in Taiwan during the Sino-French War and in 1885 became the first governor of the province of Taiwan, where he is remembered for his modernisation efforts.

Agronomist Yuan Longping is born on 7 September 1930. Known as the Father of Hybrid Rice for developing the first hybrid rice varieties in the 1970s, he received the Medal of the Republic, China's highest honour, in 2019.

On 7 September 2010, a Chinese trawler collides with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol boats in disputed waters near the Senkaku Islands. Japan's detention of the skipper, Zhan Qixiong, triggers a major diplomatic dispute with China.

Death of Yoshiko Ōtaka
Japanese singer and actress Yoshiko Ōtaka, born Yamaguchi in China in 1920, dies on 7 September 2014. Under the Chinese name Li Xianglan she starred in films for the Manchukuo Film Association, which concealed her Japanese origins so that she could stand for China on screen; she later became a journalist and a politician.

Meng Zhixiang dies on 7 September 934. A Later Tang general who became military governor of Xichuan Circuit, he founded the Later Shu dynasty during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.

Agui is born on 7 September 1717. A Manchu official of the Blue Banner, one of the Eight Banners, he served the Qing government and took part in its campaigns in Xinjiang before being transferred to the White Banner.

China announces reinforcements on the Indian border
On 7 September 1965, during the war between India and Pakistan, China announces that it will reinforce its troops on the Indian border. The conflict, which began in August, ended with a ceasefire brokered through the United Nations Security Council.

Diver Gao Min is born in Zigong on 7 September 1970. She won the Olympic 3 metre springboard title at the 1988 Seoul Games and again in Barcelona in 1992.
