    Treaty of Nerchinsk

    On 6 September 1689, the Qing empire and Russia sign the Treaty of Nerchinsk in the small town of that name. It set the border between the two states in Siberia and ended the military conflict over the Amur river region.

    Birth of Yao Yilin

    Politician Yao Yilin is born in Hong Kong on 6 September 1917. Vice-premier of the People's Republic of China from 1983 to 1988, he served as first vice-premier from 1988 to 1993.

    Second Battle of Changsha

    The second Battle of Changsha opens on 6 September 1941, when Chinese guerrillas attack Japanese troops in the mountains south of Yueyang. A Japanese force of 120,000 men reached Changsha on 27 September but again failed to break Chinese resistance in Hunan.

    Birth of Sam Hui

    Hong Kong singer, songwriter and actor Sam Hui is born on 6 September 1948. The first major cantopop star, nicknamed the God of Songs, he popularised the genre in the 1970s by singing in everyday Cantonese about the concerns of his time.

    Death of Yang Hucheng

    General Yang Hucheng dies on 6 September 1949. Born in 1893, this commander of the warlord era had fought for the Kuomintang during the Chinese Civil War.

    Death of Shi Liang

    Lawyer and activist Shi Liang dies on 6 September 1985. The only woman arrested in the 1936 Seven Gentlemen Incident, on the eve of the war with Japan, she became the first minister of justice of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

    Death of Song Qiyun

    Journalist Song Qiyun, a Chinese Communist Party member and editor-in-chief of the Northwest Cultural Daily from 1930 to 1937, is executed on 6 September 1949. Held by the Kuomintang since 1941, he dies alongside his wife Xu Linxia and their youngest son, Song Zhenzhong.

    Death of Song Zhenzhong

    Song Zhenzhong, born on 15 March 1941 and known as Little Radish Head, is killed on 6 September 1949 along with his parents, both Chinese Communist Party members, in a mass killing of Kuomintang detainees. Identified as China's youngest martyr, he has been commemorated with several monuments.

    Death of Xu Linxia

    Communist activist Xu Linxia is executed on 6 September 1949, together with her husband Song Qiyun and their youngest son. Born in Pi County, she had led the Chinese Communist Party's women's branch there before her arrest by the Kuomintang in 1941.

    Hong Kong director and producer Jacob Cheung is born in Hong Kong on 6 September 1959. His film Beyond the Sunset won Best Film at the Hong Kong Film Awards, and A Battle of Wits was nominated at the Golden Bauhinia Awards in 2006.
