  1. Death of Zhou Enlai

    Death

    Zhou Enlai, the first Premier of the People's Republic of China, dies in Beijing. Born in Huaiyin, Jiangsu, in 1898, he heads the government under Mao Zedong from October 1949 until his death and serves as foreign minister from 1949 to 1958; a skilled diplomat, he helps consolidate Communist Party rule, shape China's foreign policy and build its economy.

  2. Birth of Su Shi, known as Su Dongpo

    Su Shi, known as Su Dongpo, is born in Meizhou into a prominent literary family, the son of Su Xun and brother of Su Zhe. A scholar-official and artist of the Song dynasty caught up in factional struggles between reformers and conservatives, he spends much of his career in exile, a time when his writing flourishes; a towering figure in Chinese literature and the arts, he leaves a body of work whose influence spreads across the Sinosphere, and dies in 1101.

    Sheng Shicai is born in Kaiyuan, Liaoning. The warlord rules Xinjiang province from 12 April 1933 to 29 August 1944; he dies in Taiwan in 1970.

    Tennis player Peng Shuai is born in Xiangtan. Ranked 14th in singles in 2011, she excels in doubles, winning Wimbledon in 2013 and the French Open in 2014 alongside Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei and becoming, in February 2014, the first Chinese player to reach world number one in the discipline.

    General Song Renqiong, born in 1909, dies. An officer of the People's Liberation Army, he was one of the Chinese Communist Party's so-called Eight Immortals.

  10. Death of General Xu Qinxian

    Death

    General Xu Qinxian, born in 1935, dies. As commander of the People's Liberation Army's 38th Group Army, he refused in 1989 to use force against the Tiananmen Square protesters in Beijing; court-martialled, he spent five years in prison and was expelled from the Communist Party.

  11. Sima Chi becomes emperor of the Jin dynasty

    Sima Chi succeeds his brother Sima Zhong as emperor of the Jin dynasty, reigning as Emperor Huai despite a challenge from another brother, Sima Ying. Captured in July 311 during the Disaster of Yongjia, he is executed in 313 on the orders of Liu Cong, ruler of the Xiongnu state of Han-Zhao.

    Journalist and activist Dai Qing is born in Chongqing. The daughter of a Communist hero, adopted by Mao Zedong's defence minister and herself a former soldier, she becomes one of the first Chinese journalists to voice dissident views, opposing the Three Gorges Dam and speaking out during the Tiananmen Square protests.
