  1. Dingxiang earthquake devastates Shanxi

    Disaster

    An earthquake of magnitude 7.25 devastates Dingxiang and Xinxian counties in what is now Shanxi province. At least 32,300 people die, including about 19,742 in Xinzhou, 1,890 in Taiyuan and 759 in Guoxian County; more than 50,000 head of livestock also perish.

  2. Death of Wen Tianxiang

    Wen Tianxiang, Duke of Xinguo, born in 1236, dies. He was a statesman, general and scholar of the Song dynasty.

  3. Death of Wang Yangming

    Death

    Philosopher Wang Shouren, known as Wang Yangming, born in 1472, dies. A statesman, general and Neo-Confucian thinker of the Ming dynasty, he is generally regarded as the most important Neo-Confucian after Zhu Xi, whose rationalist dualism he rejected; together with Lu Xiangshan he is considered a founder of the School of the Mind, or Lu-Wang school.

  4. Death of Liang Sicheng

    Architect and scholar Liang Sicheng, born in Tokyo in 1901, dies in Beijing. He was the son of Liang Qichao.

  5. Death of Emperor Jingzong of Tang

    Death

    Emperor Jingzong of Tang, born Li Zhan in 809, is murdered by the eunuchs of his court. The son of Muzong and brother of Wenzong and Wuzong, he had reigned since 824; the eunuchs install Wenzong in his place and keep him under their control.

  6. Death of Chan master Guishan Lingyou

    Death

    Chan monk Guishan Lingyou, also known as Weishan Lingyou, dies at the age of eighty-three. Born in 771 in Changxi, Fuzhou, a disciple of Baizhang Huaihai, he founded the Weiyang school of Chan together with his own disciple Yangshan Huiji and is regarded as its first patriarch.

  7. Death of Emperor Xizong of Jin

    Death

    Emperor Xizong of the Jurchen Jin dynasty, born in 1119, dies. He had reigned since 1135.

  8. Birth of Gu Zhutong

    Birth

    Gu Zhutong, also known by his courtesy name Moshan, is born. A Kuomintang general, he goes on to a political career in the Republic of China on Taiwan; he dies in 1987.

    Liu Yongfu, born in Guangdong in 1837, dies. A soldier of fortune who commanded the Black Flag Army, he was in 1895 the last head of government of the Republic of Formosa before the Japanese occupation.

    Hualien County is established in Taiwan. The island's largest county, on its mountainous east coast, it has a population of about 350,000 across 4,628 square kilometres and its seat is the city of Hualien.

  11. Birth of Cao Wenxuan

    Birth

    Children's author Cao Wenxuan is born in Yancheng. Known for Bronze and Sunflower, a novel about a mute boy and his adopted younger sister growing up in 1970s China, he receives the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2016.

  13. Shanghai Pudong Development Bank is founded

    Economy

    The Shanghai Pudong Development Bank is founded to finance the development of Pudong, Shanghai's future business district, then still at the planning stage.

  14. Launch of the Einstein Probe

    Science

    China launches the Einstein Probe, a small X-ray space observatory designed to detect transient astronomical phenomena and study variable objects in the soft X-ray band between 0.5 and 4 keV. Its two instruments, a wide-field telescope and a narrow-field follow-up telescope, were developed partly in collaboration with the European Space Agency and Germany's Max Planck Institute.

  18. Launch of the Ziyuan 3 satellite

    China launches Ziyuan 3, an optical Earth observation satellite of the ZY family, whose name means resource. The family spans several generations of very different spacecraft, the earliest of which were developed jointly with Brazil.
