  1. Birth of Sammo Hung

    Birth

    Sammo Hung, born Hung Kam-bo, is born in Hong Kong. Martial artist, actor, director, fight choreographer and producer, he becomes one of the architects of the Hong Kong New Wave of the 1980s, helps reinvent the martial arts film and shape the jiangshi genre, and works alongside Jackie Chan, King Hu and John Woo.

  2. Death of Run Run Shaw

    Death

    Run Run Shaw, born in Ningbo in 1907, dies in Hong Kong at the age of 106. The entertainment mogul and philanthropist founded the Shaw Brothers Studio and the broadcaster TVB.

  3. Birth of Feng Guozhang

    Birth

    Feng Guozhang is born in Hejian. A general of the Beiyang Army, he serves as President of the Republic of China from 6 August 1917 to 10 October 1918 and is regarded as the founder of the Zhili clique, the warlord faction that controlled most of northern China; he dies in Beijing in 1919.

    Swimmer Fu Yuanhui is born in Hangzhou. A backstroke specialist, she takes up swimming at the age of five, her father hoping it will help with her asthma.

  5. Earthquake strikes Tibet

    Disaster

    A moment magnitude 7.1 earthquake strikes Tingri County, south-west of Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region, and northern Nepal. Its hypocentre lies ten kilometres below the surface.

  6. Death of Empress Xiaohuizhang

    Death

    Empress Xiaohuizhang, of the Khorchin Mongol Borjigit clan, dies. Second empress consort of the Shunzhi Emperor from 1654 until his death in 1661, she was honoured as Empress Dowager Renxian during the reign of her stepson, the Kangxi Emperor.

    Birth

    Composer Xiao Youmei is born. A noted music educator as well as a composer, he dies in 1940.

    Birth

    Diplomat and jurist Li Shengjiao is born. An authority on the international law of the sea, boundary demarcation and China-US relations, he is regarded as one of China's most distinguished diplomats; he dies in 2017.

  9. Birth of Liu Bolin

    Birth

    Sculptor and photographer Liu Bolin is born in Shandong province. A Beijing-based performance artist and dissenter, he earns worldwide fame and the nickname “the Invisible Man” for photographs in which he blends into his surroundings; his series Hiding in the City begins as a performance in 2006.

  10. Death of Zhao Jingshen

    Writer and translator Zhao Jingshen, born in Lishui, Zhejiang, in 1902, dies. A member of a literary research society, he also made a successful contribution to Chinese opera.

  11. Birth of Hsiao Mei-yu

    Birth

    Taiwanese cyclist Hsiao Mei-yu is born in Taichung. Asian road champion in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 and road race gold medallist at the 2010 Asian Games, she represents Taiwan at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

    Birth

    Footballer Li Ying is born in Chongqing. A forward for the Chinese national team, she finishes as top scorer of the 2018 Asian Cup with seven goals.

  13. Death of Bishop Joseph Meng Ziwen

    Death

    Catholic bishop Joseph Meng Ziwen dies. After twenty-five years in a labour camp, he served as a bishop of the so-called underground church, his appointment coming from the Holy See, while the authorities recognised him only as a priest of the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association.
