    Sino-Soviet border conflict begins

    On 2 March 1969 a series of armed clashes begins between China and the Soviet Union, the climax of the Sino-Soviet split of the 1960s. The fighting over Zhenbao Island, on the Ussuri River, brings the two communist states to the brink of nuclear war, before a border demarcation agreement is reached in 1991.

    Film director and novelist Dai Sijie is born on 2 March 1954 in Putian, Fujian. He lives in France.

    Death of Corey Yuen

    Corey Yuen, Hong Kong actor, producer and film director born on 15 February 1951, dies in Hong Kong on 2 March 2022.

    Death of Liu Rengui

    Liu Rengui, a Chinese general and statesman of the Tang dynasty, dies on 2 March 685. Chancellor during the reign of Emperor Gaozong, dominated by Empress Wu, and then under her regency, he is known for his military prowess in the conquest of Baekje and for the political skill that keeps him on good terms with the strong-willed empress.

    Death of Empress Xiaoshengxian

    Empress Xiaoshengxian, consort of the Yongzheng Emperor and mother of the Qianlong Emperor, dies on 2 March 1777. Honoured as Empress Mother Chongqing during her son's reign, she rules the Qing imperial harem and remains Empress Dowager for forty-two years, longer than many emperors reigned, though she never holds the rank of empress consort in her lifetime.

    Birth of Chen Shizeng

    Chen Shizeng, original name Chen Hengke, is born on 2 March 1876 in Fenghuang, Hunan. A painter, critic and educator, son of Chen Baozhen, a Qing governor of Hunan, he champions traditional literati painting, in his own work and in his A Study of Chinese Literati Painting, at a time when other Chinese artists are turning to Western-influenced styles. He dies on 12 September 1923 in Nanjing.

    Birth of Shangguan Yunzhu

    Actress Shangguan Yunzhu, born Wei Junluo, is born on 2 March 1920. Fleeing to Shanghai when her hometown of Jiangyin is attacked by the Japanese, she becomes a stage and film actress there and stars in several landmark left-wing films of the era. Regarded as one of China's most talented and versatile actresses, she dies on 23 November 1968.

    Birth of Teddy Robin

    Teddy Robin, born Kwan Wai-pang, is born on 2 March 1945. A Hong Kong singer, actor and director, he starts out in the 1960s, at the height of Hong Kong's English-language pop, by founding the band Teddy Robin and the Playboys, before moving into film as an actor, director, producer and composer.

    Birth of Johnny Chiang

    Chiang Chi-chen, also known by his English name Johnny Chiang, Taiwanese political scientist and politician, is born on 2 March 1972. An associate professor at Soochow University, then Director-General of the Government Information Office from 2010 to 2011, he sits in the Legislative Yuan from 2012, is elected Chairman of the Kuomintang in March 2020 and becomes vice president of the Legislative Yuan in 2024.

    Birth of Xu Zhiyong

    Human rights activist Xu Zhiyong is born on 2 March 1973. A former professor at the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and a co-founder of the Open Constitution Initiative, he campaigns for social justice, the rule of law and political reform; first arrested in 2009 and convicted several times, he is sentenced in 2023 to fourteen years in prison for "subversion".

    Gymnast Yang Yun is born on 2 March 1986 in Zhuzhou, Hunan. At the 2000 Summer Olympics she wins bronze on the uneven bars and is part of the bronze-medal team, a team medal later stripped.

    Volleyball player Yan Ni is born on 2 March 1987 in Shenyang. With the Chinese national team she wins the women's Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

    Birth of Zhu Xueying

    Trampoline gymnast Zhu Xueying is born on 2 March 1998 in Beijing. She wins the women's trampoline Olympic title at the 2020 Summer Games.

    Taoyuan Metro opens

    On 2 March 2017 the Taoyuan Airport line opens in Taiwan, the first line of the Taoyuan Metro, a rapid transit system serving the Taoyuan City area and planned to comprise five lines.

    Birth of Faith Yang

    Taiwanese musician Faith Yang is born on 2 March 1974. Raised in Sydney, where she studies biology and genetics at the University of Sydney, she wins the award for best female performer at the Taiwan Golden Music Awards in 2000 for the album Silence.

    Lai Pin-yu, a Taiwanese politician of the Democratic Progressive Party, is born on 2 March 1992 in Taipei. Elected to the Legislative Yuan in 2020, she is also known as a cosplayer.

    Jin Longguo, a Chinese singer based in South Korea, is born on 2 March 1996. He is best known as a member of the South Korean project boy band JBJ and for finishing 21st on the survival show Produce 101 Season 2.

    Windy Zhan, a Hong Kong Cantopop singer and actress, is born on 2 March 2006. A member of the girl group After Class and a contestant in 2021 on the first season of TVB's singing competition Stars Academy, she makes her solo debut on 31 March 2023.
