    Feast of Saint Agnes Tsao Kou Ying

    On 1 March the Catholic Church commemorates Agnes Tsao Kou Ying, a Chinese laywoman of the Qing dynasty martyred in 1856 for preaching the Gospel in Guangxi. She is canonized as a martyr-saint by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 2000; her own feast day falls on 1 March, and she is also honoured on 9 July with the other Martyr Saints of China.

    Death of Ayurbarwada Buyantu Khan, Yuan emperor

    Ayurbarwada Buyantu Khan, fourth emperor of the Yuan dynasty, known by his temple name as Emperor Renzong of Yuan, dies on 1 March 1320. Emperor of China, he is also counted as the eighth Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, a title that has become nominal with the division of the empire.

    Birth of Tsangyang Gyatso, the Sixth Dalai Lama

    Tsangyang Gyatso is born on 1 March 1683 at Tawang. Recognized as the Sixth Dalai Lama, he is the only holder of the title to have refused the life of an ordained monk, and Tibetan history remembers him above all for his songs and poetry. He dies on 15 November 1706 at Kunganor.

    Puyi crowned emperor in Manchuria

    On 1 March 1934 Puyi, until then regent, is crowned emperor in Manchuria: the empire is thus revived under the auspices of Japan, which has occupied the territory since 1931 and declared it independent.

    Birth of Zhang Nan

    Badminton player Zhang Nan is born on 1 March 1990 in Beijing. With partner Zhao Yunlei he wins the mixed doubles world title in 2011, 2014 and 2015, Olympic gold in London in 2012 and bronze in Rio in 2016, where he also takes the men's doubles title with Fu Haifeng.

    Birth of Ye Shiwen

    Swimmer Ye Shiwen is born on 1 March 1996 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. A medley specialist, she becomes world champion in the 200 m individual medley at fifteen, in Shanghai in 2011, then wins two Olympic titles at the London Games the following year.

    Birth of Chen Yufei

    Badminton player Chen Yufei is born on 1 March 1998 in Hangzhou. She wins the women's singles Olympic title at the Tokyo Games.

    Kunming railway station attack

    On 1 March 2014 a mass stabbing targets passengers at the railway station in Kunming, capital of Yunnan province. The attack leaves 31 dead and 143 injured.

    Birth of Deng Yanda

    Deng Yanda, an officer of the Chinese Nationalist Party, is born on 1 March 1895. He breaks with the party leadership in 1927, judging that it has betrayed its principles, and in 1930 tries to found a "third party", later renamed the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party. Convicted of treason by the Nationalist government, he is secretly executed on 29 November 1931.

    China joins the Universal Postal Union

    The Republic of China, then governed by the Beiyang government in Beijing, joins the Universal Postal Union on 1 March 1914.

    Birth of Kevin Tsai

    Taiwanese television host and writer Kevin Tsai is born on 1 March 1962. He is best known for co-hosting the Chung T'ien Television talk show Kangsi Coming with Dee Hsu from 2004 to 2016, and for his self-help book series Ways of Speaking.

    Birth of Jia Zongyang

    Freestyle skier Jia Zongyang, an aerials specialist, is born on 1 March 1991 in Fushun. A former gymnast, he wins his first international medal at the 2013 World Championships, then Olympic bronze in Sochi in 2014 and silver at the 2018 Winter Games, along with nine World Cup victories.

    Death of the Ninth Jebtsundamba Khutughtu

    Jampal Namdol Chokye Gyaltsen, born in Lhasa on 6 January 1933 and recognized in Buddhist tradition as the Ninth Jebtsundamba Khutughtu, dies on 1 March 2012 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

    Birth of Antonio Rubino

    Antonio Rubino is born on 1 March 1578 in Strambino. A missionary in India and then in China, he dies in Nagasaki on 25 March 1643.

    Birth of John Chiang

    Chiang Hsiao-yen, also known by his English name John Chiang, is born on 1 March 1942. A Taiwanese politician of the Kuomintang, he is widely held to be the illegitimate son of Chiang Ching-kuo, which would make him a grandson of Chiang Kai-shek.

    Footballer Ji Xiang is born on 1 March 1990. A right winger or right-back, he plays for Jiangsu Changjin.
