France and Britain declare war on China
On 3 March 1857 France and the United Kingdom declare war on Qing China: the Second Opium War, also called the Arrow War after the British-registered ship seized by Qing officials on 8 October 1856. The conflict, which lasts until 1860, ends in a second defeat for the Qing and the forced legalisation of the opium trade.

Birth of Nicolas Trigault
Nicolas Trigault, a Jesuit priest from the Southern Netherlands, is born on 3 March 1577 in Douai. A missionary in China and author of De Christiana Expeditione apud Sinas, he works on the romanisation of Chinese writing. He dies in Hangzhou on 14 November 1628.
