  1. Chiang Kai-shek resigns as President of the Republic of China

    Chiang Kai-shek resigns as President of the Republic of China in 1949, as his mainland-based government faces defeat by the Communists in the Chinese Civil War. He goes on to lead the Republic of China from Taiwan until his death in 1975.

  2. Birth of tennis player Zhang Shuai

    Birth

    Tennis player Zhang Shuai is born in Tianjin in 1989. A professional since 2004, she wins three WTA singles titles and nineteen women's doubles titles, including the 2021 US Open and the 2019 and 2026 Australian Opens.

  3. First confirmed COVID-19 case in Taiwan

    Taiwan confirms its first COVID-19 case on 21 January 2020. Health authorities activate the Central Epidemic Command Center, drawing on the experience of the 2003 SARS outbreak, and roll out around a hundred measures over the following month, from border screening and case identification to digital contact tracing and quarantine.

  4. Death of Yang Pu, last ruler of Yang Wu

    Death

    Yang Pu, the last ruler of the Yang Wu state during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period and the only one to claim the title of emperor, dies in 939. Real power lay with the regents Xu Wen and then Xu Zhigao (Li Bian), who forced him to yield the throne in 938 and founded the Southern Tang.

    Birth

    Emily Lau, a Hong Kong journalist turned politician, is born in 1952. A champion of press freedom and human rights, she becomes in 1991 the first woman directly elected to Hong Kong's Legislative Council, and later chairs the Democratic Party.

    Biophysicist Xiaowei Zhuang is born in 1972. A professor at Harvard University and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, she is known for developing the STORM super-resolution microscope and for discovering new molecular structures.

  11. Death of novelist Zhang Jie

    Death

    Novelist Zhang Jie, born in Beijing in 1937, dies in New York in 2022. A leading figure of "scar literature" and regarded as China's foremost feminist novelist, she received the Malaparte Prize in 1989.

  12. Death of general Liu Zhijun

    Death

    Liu Zhijun, a general under Zhu Wen in the late Tang period and then in the Later Liang, dies in 918. Fearing his master would turn against him, he had defected, first to Qi and then to Former Shu, whose emperor Wang Jian, wary of his talent, has him executed.

  13. Death of general An Chongrong

    An Chongrong, a leading general of the Later Jin, dies in 942. Opposed to Emperor Shi Jingtang's friendly relations with the Khitan Liao state, he had rebelled, was quickly defeated, and was killed by his own subordinates.

  14. Death of Yang Guangyuan

    Death

    Yang Guangyuan, a general of the Later Tang and Later Jin and Prince of Qi, dies in 945. He had rebelled against the Later Jin in 944 counting on Khitan Liao support; after the Liao relief forces were repelled, his son Yang Chengxun arrested him and surrendered, and he was killed by soldiers sent by general Li Shouzhen.
