Cao Rui, the second emperor of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period, dies in 239. His parentage remains disputed: his mother, Lady Zhen, had been Yuan Xi's wife before marrying Cao Pi, the first ruler of Wei.

Wang Chongyang, founder of the Quanzhen school of Taoism, dies in 1170. He formally accepted seven major disciples, known as the Seven Perfected, among them Ma Danyang, Qiu Chuji and Sun Bu'er.

Table tennis player Fan Zhendong is born in Guangzhou in 1997. The youngest member of the national team when he joined in 2012 at age 15, he becomes the youngest world champion, reaches world number one in April 2018, and wins Olympic gold in the team event in Tokyo in 2021 and in singles in Paris in 2024.

BYD enters the car industry

BYD, a Shenzhen battery maker, moves into car manufacturing in 2003 by buying the near-bankrupt Tsinchuan Automobile Company. By 2022 it is China's leading electric vehicle brand, and in the fourth quarter of 2023 it overtakes Tesla to become the world's largest.

Empress He, wife of Emperor Zhaozong at the end of the Tang dynasty and mother of Emperor Ai, dies in 906. Her husband, she herself and her sons all die at the hands of the warlord Zhu Quanzhong, who goes on to seize the Tang throne and found the Later Liang.

Death of pirate lord Wang Zhi
Death
Pirate lord Wang Zhi, one of the leading wokou figures of the Jiajing era, dies in 1560. A salt merchant turned smuggler under the Ming maritime prohibitions, he had built a syndicate stretching from Japan to Thailand, and is credited with spreading European firearms across East Asia and guiding the first Portuguese to Japan in 1543.

Historian and sinologist Yu Ying-shih is born in 1930. A professor at Harvard, Yale and then Princeton, he is known for his command of the sources of Chinese history and philosophy and for his advocacy of a new Confucianism. He dies in 2021.

Buddhist monk and scholar Sheng-yen, born Zhang Baokang, is born in 1931. Founder of Dharma Drum Mountain in Taiwan, he is one of the leading modern teachers of Chan Buddhism and a major figure in its revival and adaptation to the modern world. He dies in 2009.
