Emperor Shizong, fifth ruler of the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty, dies in 1189. His reign, from 1161 to 1189 under the era name Dading, was the longest and most stable of all the Jin emperors.

Battle of Weihaiwei begins
War
The Battle of Weihaiwei begins in 1895 in Shandong, pitting the forces of the Empire of Japan against those of the Chinese empire until 12 February. The last major battle of the First Sino-Japanese War, it ends in a decisive Japanese victory.

War
Following its naval engagement with South Vietnam, China gains control in 1974 of all the Paracel Islands, an archipelago of some 130 small coral islands and reefs in the South China Sea whose sovereignty remains disputed.

Lo Wei, director and actor born in Jiangsu in 1918 and best known for The Big Boss and Fist of Fury starring Bruce Lee, dies in Hong Kong. He began acting in Sichuan and Shanghai during the war, then directed for MP&GI and the Shaw Brothers.

Birth of the monk Shi Nenghai
Birth
Shi Nenghai, born Gong Xueguang, is born in 1886. A monk of the Gelug school, he plays a leading role in spreading Tibetan Buddhism among Han communities during the Republic of China, and with Master Fazun is one of the two main figures of the revival of esoteric Buddhism in China. He dies in 1967.

Li Jitao, a general and politician of the Five Dynasties period, dies in 924. After the death of his father Li Sizhao he had taken over his territory and switched allegiance to the Later Liang, Jin's archrival; once the Later Tang conquered the Later Liang, Emperor Zhuangzong, initially inclined to spare him, found that he was still plotting against imperial rule.
