    The Catholic Church commemorates Lawrence Bai Xiaoman, a Chinese layman from Guizhou who converted to Christianity and was killed in Guangxi in 1856. Venerated as a martyr, he was canonised in Rome by John Paul II on 1 October 2000.

    Death of Emperor Dezong of Tang

    Death of Emperor Dezong of Tang, born Li Kuo in 742, the thirteenth Tang emperor, who has reigned since 779. Supported by scholar-ministers who reformed the tax system, he faced military opposition from the provinces and fostered the growing role of eunuchs at court.

    Birth of François-Xavier d'Entrecolles

    Birth in Limoges of the Jesuit François-Xavier d'Entrecolles, a missionary in imperial China. In two letters published from 1712 onwards he reveals how Chinese porcelain is made, helping to bring porcelain production to Europe. He dies in Beijing in 1741.
