Philosopher, essayist and diplomat Hu Shih, born in Shanghai on 17 December 1891, dies in Taiwan in 1962. His courtesy name was Shizhi.

Shanghai People's Commune dissolved
In 1967, during the Cultural Revolution, Zhang Chunqiao announces the dissolution of the Shanghai People's Commune, replacing its local government with a revolutionary committee. The movement, launched by Mao Zedong in 1966 and lasting until his death in 1976, aimed to purge Chinese society of capitalist and traditional elements.

Death of Liu Yun, a military governor of the Later Han and cousin of the emperor Liu Chengyou. Named as successor, he is placed under house arrest on his way to the capital and executed on the orders of Guo Wei, founder of the Later Zhou; his father Liu Chong then founds the Northern Han to avenge him.
