    Death of Hu Shih

    Philosopher, essayist and diplomat Hu Shih, born in Shanghai on 17 December 1891, dies in Taiwan in 1962. His courtesy name was Shizhi.

    Shanghai People's Commune dissolved

    In 1967, during the Cultural Revolution, Zhang Chunqiao announces the dissolution of the Shanghai People's Commune, replacing its local government with a revolutionary committee. The movement, launched by Mao Zedong in 1966 and lasting until his death in 1976, aimed to purge Chinese society of capitalist and traditional elements.

    Death of Liu Yun

    Death of Liu Yun, a military governor of the Later Han and cousin of the emperor Liu Chengyou. Named as successor, he is placed under house arrest on his way to the capital and executed on the orders of Guo Wei, founder of the Later Zhou; his father Liu Chong then founds the Northern Han to avenge him.

    Landscape painter, poet and calligrapher Wu Li, courtesy name Yushan and brush name Mojing, dies in Shanghai in 1718. A native of Changshu in Jiangsu, he was born around 1632.

    Hong Kong actor and Cantopop singer Adam Cheng, whose real name is Cheng Siu-chau, is born in 1947. After the series The Greed of Man, an urban legend known as the 'Ting Hai effect', after his character, holds that world stock markets fall whenever a new series starring him is released.

    In 1966 Ghana's president Kwame Nkrumah is overthrown by a military coup while on a visit to China. A leading figure of independence and pan-Africanism, he had led Ghana since 1957, first as prime minister and then, from 1960, as president.
