Liu Xiu proclaims himself emperor as Guangwu and restores the Han dynasty, after the collapse of the short-lived Xin. He founds the Eastern Han, whose rule over the whole of China proper is secured by the end of his reign.

Physician and activist Chiang Wei-shui dies. A founding member of the Taiwanese Cultural Association and of the Taiwanese People's Party, he stands among the leading figures of resistance to Japanese rule on the island.

Red Guards beat Bian Zhongyun to death
Red Guards at an experimental high school in Beijing beat their deputy vice principal, Bian Zhongyun, to death with sticks, accusing her of counter-revolutionary revisionism. The daughters of Deng Xiaoping and Liu Shaoqi are among them, and the killing is one of the first deaths of the Cultural Revolution.

New Guangzhou Baiyun airport opens
The new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport opens twenty-eight kilometres from the city centre. It replaces the old airport, seventy-two years old and hemmed into the city with a single runway, and serves as the hub of China Southern Airlines.

The communications satellite AsiaSat 8 is placed in geostationary orbit. Built by the American firm Space Systems/Loral, it is operated by the Hong Kong company AsiaSat.

Li Decheng dies. A leading general of the Wu state during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, he bore the title of Prince of Zhao, and his family remained honoured under the Southern Tang.
