Japan's Twenty-One Demands on China
Politics
Japan, under Prime Minister Okuma Shigenobu, presents the Twenty-One Demands to the government of the Republic of China in 1915. The secret demands would greatly extend Japanese control: Japan would keep the former German leased territory seized in 1914, gain influence in Manchuria and Inner Mongolia, and, under the fifth group, a decisive say in finance, policing and government affairs that would in effect make China a protectorate.

Death of Huang Xianfan

Huang Xianfan, historian, anthropologist, ethnologist, educator and folklorist born in Fusui County in 1899, dies in Guilin. He is regarded as one of the most important Chinese ethnologists of the twentieth century.

Emperor Huizong of Song abdicates
Politics
In 1126, as the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty invades the Song empire, Emperor Huizong abdicates in favour of his eldest son Zhao Huan, who becomes Emperor Qinzong. The eighth Song emperor and the penultimate ruler of the Northern Song, Huizong was also a celebrated painter, poet and calligrapher.

Birth of Huo Yuanjia
Birth
Huo Yuanjia, master of Mizong Quan, one of the Chinese martial arts styles, is born in Tianjin. Famed for his victories over foreign fighters, whose reality is disputed, he founded the Jingwu physical culture school in Shanghai and is regarded as a national hero in China. He died in 1910.

With no schooling beyond elementary level, he was ranked by Forbes in 2008 as the 178th richest person in the world, and died in October that year.

Battle of the Yijiangshan Islands
War
The Battle of the Yijiangshan Islands begins in 1955 over two islets of about one square kilometre some thirty kilometres off the mainland, one of the last Nationalist strongholds near the Chinese coast. Part of the First Taiwan Strait Crisis, it ends on 20 January with a People's Liberation Army victory and the destruction of the entire garrison.
