  1. Birth of Puyi, the last emperor of China

    Birth

    Aisin Gioro Puyi is born in Beijing in 1906. The twelfth and last emperor of the Qing dynasty, the last to rule the Chinese Empire, he reigns under the era name Xuantong from 1908 to 1912 and again briefly in 1917, and dies in his native city in 1967.

  2. Death of the Qianlong Emperor

    Death

    The Qianlong Emperor, born Aisin Gioro Hongli in 1711, son of the Yongzheng Emperor, dies in 1799. Sixth emperor of the Qing dynasty, he officially reigned over China from October 1735 to February 1796, and his reign is regarded as one of the golden ages of Chinese civilisation and the height of the dynasty.

  3. Death of Li Wenliang, the Wuhan whistleblower

    Ophthalmologist Li Wenliang, born in Beizhen in 1985, dies in Wuhan in 2020 at the age of 34. As early as 30 December 2019, he had warned fellow doctors about a SARS-like virus affecting several patients at his hospital, the virus that would go on to cause the COVID-19 pandemic.

  4. Saint John of Triora, martyr at Changsha

    Festival

    On this date, according to the Roman Martyrology, the Catholic Church commemorates John of Triora (born Francesco Maria Lantrua), a Franciscan priest born in Molini di Triora, Italy, in 1760, who went to China as a missionary. Tortured for his faith and executed at Changsha, in Hunan, in 1816, he is venerated by the Church as a martyr and saint.

  5. Birth of diver Cao Yuan

    Birth

    Cao Yuan is born in Beijing in 1995. The diver wins Olympic gold in the synchronised 10 metre platform with Zhang Yanquan at the 2012 Games, then in the 3 metre springboard at the 2016 Rio Games.
