  1. Birth of the Chongzhen Emperor, last of the Ming

    Birth

    Zhu Youjian, the future Chongzhen Emperor, is born in Beijing in 1611. Fifth son of the Taichang Emperor, he succeeds his elder brother Tianqi at the age of sixteen and becomes the sixteenth and last emperor of the Ming dynasty, whose rule ends with his death in April 1644.

  2. Birth of Jin Yong, master of the wuxia novel

    Birth

    Louis Cha Leung-yung, better known by his pen name Jin Yong, is born in 1924. Author of fifteen wuxia novels written between 1955 and 1972 and sold in more than 100 million copies, not counting pirated editions, he is one of the most popular Chinese writers of all time and co-founder of the Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao. He dies in 2018.

  3. Luhuo earthquake in Sichuan

    Disaster

    In 1973, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes near the town of Zhaggo in the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan. Reaching a maximum intensity of X on the Modified Mercalli scale, it kills between 2,175 and 2,204 people, injures more than 2,700 and devastates Luhuo County.

  4. Birth of literary critic Qian Xingcun, known as A Ying

    Birth

    Qian Xingcun, known by the pen name A Ying, is born in Wuhu, Anhui, in 1900. Moving to Shanghai in 1918, he writes extensively after the May Fourth Movement as a member of the leftist Sun Society and the League of Left-Wing Writers, joins the Communist Party in 1926, and in the 1930s pens screenplays for the Mingxing Film Company and reviews of contemporary Chinese literature. He dies in 1977.

    Zhou Yinghua, known as Michael Chow, is born in Shanghai in 1939. He becomes an actor and restaurateur.

  6. Birth of philosopher Tu Weiming

    Birth

    Tu Weiming is born in Kunming in 1940. Educated in Taiwan and North America, the philosopher and historian joins Harvard University in 1981 as professor of Chinese history and philosophy, heads the Harvard-Yenching Institute and is one of the leading figures of New Confucianism.

  7. Birth of swimmer Yang Yu

    Birth

    Yang Yu is born in Hangzhou in 1985. A freestyle specialist on the Chinese national team from 1999, she wins gold in the 4 × 100 metre medley relay at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, two short-course world titles in the 200 metre freestyle in 2000 and 2006, and bronze in the 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

    Chinese sport shooter Zhang Mengxue is born in 1991. She wins the 10 metre air pistol event at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

  10. Birth of swimmer Dai Jun

    Birth

    Chinese swimmer Dai Jun is born in Shanghai in 1992. Selected for international competition from 2010, he wins bronze in the 4 × 200 metre relay at the 2012 Summer Olympics by swimming in the heats, and finishes fifteenth in the 1500 metre freestyle.

  11. Death of playwright Xia Yan

    Death

    Xia Yan, playwright, screenwriter, journalist and politician born in Yuhang in 1900, dies in Beijing in 1995. Called the 'man of sixty pen names', he is also known as Shen Naixi, Duanxuan or Duanxian.

  12. Birth of Taiwanese singer Tank

    Lü Jianzhong, better known by his stage name Tank, is born in 1982. The Taiwanese singer-songwriter, signed to HIM International Music, releases his debut album Fighting in February 2006, followed by The 3rd Round in May 2009.
