  1. Koxinga seizes Taiwan

    War

    In 1662, after a nine-month siege, the Chinese general Zheng Chenggong, better known as Koxinga, seizes the island of Taiwan, then called Formosa, and drives out the Dutch. He founds the Kingdom of Tungning there.

  2. Birth of Ngapoi Ngawang Jigme

    Birth

    Ngapoi Ngawang Jigme is born in Lhasa in 1910. A minister of the Tibetan government from 1936, governor of Kham and commander-in-chief of the Tibetan army at Chamdo in 1950, he sides with China after its army enters Tibet and leads in 1951 the Tibetan delegation that signs the Seventeen Point Agreement. He holds military and political offices until his death in Beijing in 2009.

  3. Birth of Zhang Chunqiao

    Birth

    Zhang Chunqiao is born in Juye County in 1917. A radical Maoist, he rises to senior positions in the government of the People's Republic of China before being arrested in October 1976 and sentenced in 1981 as a member of the Gang of Four. He dies in Beijing in 2005.

  4. Mao Zedong launches the Yan'an Rectification Movement

    Politics

    In 1942, Mao Zedong delivers a speech on 'Reform in Learning, the Party and Literature', setting in motion the Yan'an Rectification Movement. He will go on to found the People's Republic of China in 1949 and lead it until his death in 1976.

  5. Birth of Tony Leung Ka-fai

    Birth

    Tony Leung Ka-fai is born in Hong Kong in 1958. Often confused with Tony Leung Chiu-wai and nicknamed 'Big Tony', he wins the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor four times, the second-best record after his namesake's five. Western audiences know him for his role in Jean-Jacques Annaud's The Lover (1992).

    Wu Jingyu is born in Jingdezhen in 1987. She goes on to win two Olympic titles in taekwondo in the under 49 kg category.

    Xu Teli is born in 1877. Teacher of Mao Zedong, Cai Hesen, Xiao Zisheng and Tian Han, he serves on the 7th and 8th Central Committees of the Chinese Communist Party and dies in 1968.

    Freddy Lim is born in 1976. Frontman of the band Chthonic and former head of Amnesty International in Taiwan, he is elected to the legislature in January 2016 for the New Power Party, a newly founded political party.

  14. Mass recall campaigns begin in Taiwan

    Politics

    In February 2025, a wave of campaigns to recall elected officials, known as the 'Great Recall', begins in Taiwan and runs until August. Thirty-one Kuomintang legislators, an independent mayor and a Democratic Progressive Party councillor face recall votes; none is removed from office.
