    Birth

    Gao Xingjian is born in 1940 in Ganzhou. Novelist, playwright, critic, stage director and painter, both Chinese and French, he is awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2000.

  2. Birth of Emperor Zhezong of Song

    Birth

    Emperor Zhezong, seventh emperor of the Song dynasty, is born in 1077; his personal name is Zhao Xu. Sixth son of Emperor Shenzong, he ascends the throne at the age of nine under the supervision of his grandmother, Grand Empress Dowager Gao, and reigns from 1085 until his death in 1100; as his son died prematurely, he is succeeded by his younger half-brother, Emperor Huizong.

  3. Birth of Chen Cheng

    Birth

    Chen Cheng is born in 1897 in Qingtian, Zhejiang. A general of the National Revolutionary Army, one of the leading figures of the Kuomintang and a loyal follower of Chiang Kai-shek, whom he accompanies into exile in Taiwan, he becomes premier and then vice president of the Republic of China there, and is remembered for his reformist administration of the island. He dies in Taiwan in 1965.

  4. Chinese and North Korean forces occupy Seoul

    War

    In 1951, North Korean and Chinese forces occupy Seoul. The Korean War, fought from 25 June 1950 to 27 July 1953, pits South Korea, backed by the United Nations, against North Korea, backed by the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union; it is one of the first conflicts of the Cold War.

    Badminton player Zhang Jiewen is born in 1981 in Guangzhou. A women's doubles specialist, she becomes Olympic, world and Asian champion.

  6. Birth of Hsieh Su-wei

    Birth

    Taiwanese tennis player Hsieh Su-wei is born in 1986 in Kaohsiung. A professional since the mid-2000s, she wins three WTA singles titles but builds her record in doubles, with thirty-six tournament wins including Wimbledon in 2013, 2019, 2021 and 2023, the French Open in 2014 and 2023, and the Australian Open mixed doubles in 2024.

  7. Death of Sanmao

    Death

    Taiwanese writer Sanmao, born Chen Ping, dies in 1991. Born in 1943 in Chongqing, a novelist, translator and screenwriter, she is known for the poem used in the song "Olive Tree", for her autobiographical books and travel journals, and for a prose often tragic and melancholy.

  8. Death of Poon Lim

    Death

    Sailor Poon Lim dies in 1991 in Brooklyn. Born in 1918 on Hainan island, a second steward on the British cargo ship SS Benlomond, torpedoed by the German submarine U-172 on 23 November 1942, he survives 133 days alone on an eight-foot wooden raft in the South Atlantic, fishing and catching seabirds once the raft's provisions are exhausted.

  9. Birth of Yu Hung-chun

    Birth

    Politician Yu Hung-chun is born in 1898. Mayor of Shanghai, finance minister of the Nationalist government from November 1944, replacing a minister dismissed for corruption, he later heads the Taiwan provincial government and becomes premier of the Republic of China, in Taiwan. He dies in 1960.

  10. Birth of Lü Zhengcao

    Birth

    Lü Zhengcao is born in 1904. An officer from the Manchu minority, he is one of the original full generals (shang jiang) of the People's Liberation Army. He dies in 2009.

  11. Birth of Chen Xilian

    Birth

    Chen Xilian is born in 1915. A general of the People's Liberation Army from 1955 and a member of the Chinese Communist Party's Politburo from 1969 to 1980, he takes an active part in the removal of the Gang of Four in 1976, then, at odds with Deng Xiaoping's reforms, is demoted together with Wu De, Ji Dengkui and Wang Dongxing. He dies in 1999.

    The writer Zhou Weihui, known as Wei Hui, is born in 1973 in Yuyao. Her work deals with individualism and the place of youth in contemporary society, drawing heavily on the youth culture of Shanghai, and she is often associated with Mian Mian, another writer of the new generation.

  13. Birth of Alexander N'Doumbou

    Birth

    Footballer Alexander N'Doumbou is born in 1992 in Port-Gentil, Gabon. A Gabon international and midfielder for Zhejiang FC, he is naturalised as a Chinese citizen in 2019 and takes the name Qian Jiegei.

  14. Birth of Liu Cheng

    Birth

    Badminton player Liu Cheng is born in 1992. Men's doubles world champion in 2017 with Zhang Nan, and world and Asian junior champion in mixed doubles in 2010 with Bao Yixin, he reaches a career high of world number 2 in both events and retires from international competition in 2022.

    Taiwanese badminton player Cheng Shao-chieh is born in 1986. At the 2004 Olympics she reaches the women's singles quarter-finals, and later that year wins the girls' singles title at the World Junior Championships in Richmond, Canada.
