  1. Death of Zhang Xianzhong

    Death

    Zhang Xianzhong dies in 1647. Leader of a popular revolt that began in Shaanxi, he ruled Sichuan with great bloodshed under the name Daxi ("Great West") from 1644 to 1646, before the Qing dynasty conquered the province; betrayed by one of his lieutenants while trying to reach Shaanxi, he is killed in January 1647.

  2. Birth of Tang Shaoyi

    Birth

    Diplomat and politician Tang Shaoyi is born in 1862. The first Premier of the Republic of China, he is assassinated in 1938.

  3. John Hay announces the Open Door Policy

    Politics

    In 1900, American statesman and diplomat John Hay, Secretary of State under Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, announces the Open Door Policy to promote trade with China.

  4. Birth of Wei Jianxing

    Birth

    Wei Jianxing is born in 1931. A senior Chinese Communist Party leader, most active in the 1980s and 1990s, he sits on the Politburo Standing Committee, heads the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, serves as Party Secretary of Beijing and chairs the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. He dies in 2015.

  5. Birth of Fu Haifeng

    Birth

    Badminton player Fu Haifeng is born in 1984 in Jieyang. A doubles specialist, he wins Olympic silver with Cai Yun in Beijing in 2008, then gold in London in 2012, a title he retains in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 with Zhang Nan, and he is world champion in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011. With the Chinese team he wins the Thomas Cup and the Sudirman Cup five times in a row each.

  6. Death of Szeto Wah

    Death

    Szeto Wah dies in 2011 in Hong Kong. Born in 1931 in Kaiping, chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China and a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council from 1985 to 1997 and again from 1998 to 2004, he is also known as a calligrapher, and is affectionately nicknamed Uncle Wah by the local population.

  7. Death of Wang Chao

    Wang Chao dies in 898. Born in 846, this warlord of the Tang dynasty controlled Fujian Circuit, headquartered in Fuzhou, where he laid the power base that later allowed members of his family to found the state of Min during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.

  8. Death of Su Fengji

    Death

    Su Fengji, a chancellor of the Later Han dynasty during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, dies in 951. Described as cruel and greedy, he commits suicide when Emperor Yin of Later Han is killed while trying to fight the rebellion of the general Guo Wei.

    Mathematician Li Shanlan is born in 1811 in Haining, Zhejiang. He dies in 1882.

  10. Birth of Shen Junru

    Birth

    Lawyer and politician Shen Junru is born in 1875. He serves as president of the Supreme People's Court of the Central People's Government of the People's Republic of China and chairs the China Democratic League. He dies in 1963.

  13. Death of Lam Po-chuen

    Death

    Hong Kong voice actor Lam Po-chuen dies in 2015. Born in 1951, he voiced Doraemon in the Hong Kong version of the anime for more than thirty years and was the Cantonese voice of Sammo Hung in many of his dubbed films.

  14. Military helicopter crash in Taiwan

    Disaster

    On 2 January 2020, a Black Hawk helicopter of the Republic of China Air Force Air Rescue Group crashes in the Wulai District of New Taipei, Taiwan, during a VIP transport mission. General Shen Yi-ming, Chief of the General Staff, and seven other people on board are killed.

  15. Birth of Yu Xiaoyu

    Pair skater Yu Xiaoyu is born in 1996. With Zhang Hao she is Chinese champion in 2018, having earlier been a two-time world junior champion with her former partner Jin Yang.
