  1. Death of the Tongzhi Emperor

    Death

    The Tongzhi Emperor, tenth ruler of the Qing dynasty, dies in 1875 at eighteen, of smallpox or syphilis according to different accounts. Enthroned at five, he reigned while his mother Cixi worked to restore imperial authority; his cousin Guangxu succeeds him.

  2. Birth of the 9th Panchen Lama

    Birth

    Thubten Choekyi Nyima, the 9th Panchen Lama of Tibet, is born at Dagpo in 1883. He later sits on the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission and dies at Jyekundo in 1937.

    Sang Weihan, historian, poet and statesman of the Later Jin, dies in 947. Born in 898, he served as chief of staff under both of the dynasty's emperors, Shi Jingtang and Shi Chonggui.

  7. Execution of Liu Hulan

    Death

    Liu Hulan, a teenage communist revolutionary, is executed by the Kuomintang in 1947 at the age of 14 or 15. A party member since 1946, she had supplied food, relayed secret messages and mended uniforms for the communist forces; Mao Zedong and the party honour her as a revolutionary martyr.
