    Foxconn is founded

    In 1974 Hon Hai Precision Industry, known as Foxconn Technology, is founded in Taiwan. The electronics manufacturing group keeps its headquarters in Taiwan but builds most of its operations in the People's Republic of China, notably in Shenzhen, and becomes the Taiwanese firm with the largest export turnover.

    Chinese New Year, last possible date

    Chinese New Year is set by the Moon. 20 February is the last date on which it can begin: beyond this day, the lunar year has necessarily already turned.

    Birth of Lee Shau-kee

    Lee Shau-kee is born in Shunde, Guangdong, in 1928. A Hong Kong billionaire and philanthropist known as a property magnate, he dies in Hong Kong on 17 March 2025.

    China Academy of Space Technology is founded

    In 1968 the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), the country's main arm for the research, development and production of satellites, is established in Beijing. Based in Haidian and affiliated with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, it launches China's first artificial satellite, Dong Fang Hong I, on 24 April 1970.

    Birth of Eric Yuan

    Eric Yuan is born in 1970. A Chinese-born American businessman, he founds Zoom Video Communications and serves as its chief executive.

    Birth of Francis Hsu

    Chen-Ping Francis Hsu is born in Shanghai in 1920. He becomes the third Catholic bishop of Hong Kong, and the first Chinese to hold the see. He dies in Hong Kong on 23 May 1973.

    Death of Li Liejun

    Revolutionary general Li Liejun dies in 1946. Born in Wuning, Jiangxi, on 23 February 1882 and trained at the Imperial Japanese Army Academy, where he joined the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance, he becomes military governor of Jiangxi in 1912 after the 1911 Revolution, is deposed by Yuan Shikai in 1913, and rises against him at Hukou on 12 July 1913 with the support of Sun Yat-sen.

    Birth of Cui Yongyuan

    Television host Cui Yongyuan is born in 1963. He rises to fame presenting Tell It Like It Is on China Central Television (CCTV) from 1996 to 2002, where his affable, natural humour pioneers a relaxed, unscripted style at odds with the staid Chinese talk shows of the day. He leaves CCTV in 2013 to teach at his alma mater, the Communication University of China.

    Birth of Zhu Xiaolin

    Athlete Zhu Xiaolin is born in 1984. A marathon specialist, she runs for Liaoning.

    Birth of Ren Qian

    Diver Ren Qian is born in 2001. She wins the gold medal in the 10 m platform at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

    Bobsleigh competition ends at the Beijing Games

    In 2022 the bobsleigh events of the Beijing Winter Olympics, under way since 13 February, conclude on the Xiaohaituo track in Yanqing district. Women's monobob makes its Olympic debut, and Germany's Francesco Friedrich retains both his two-man and four-man titles.

    Beijing Winter Olympics closing ceremony

    In 2022 the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics takes place in the Beijing National Stadium at 8 p.m. local time. The final day of competition still produced four podiums: the women's curling tournament, the men's four-man bobsleigh, the women's cross-country mass start and the men's ice hockey final.

    Birth of Zhang Yangyang

    Rower Zhang Yangyang is born in Siping in 1989. She competes in rowing for China.
