Johnnie To Kei-Fung
Né en 1955, Johnnie To Kei-Fung débute sa carrière en 1973 à la TVB (Television Broadcast Ltd, de Hong Kong ).
De 1977 à 1986 il produit et réalise de nombreuses séries pour cette chaîne et tourne son premier film pour le cinéma, The Enigmatic Case en 1980. Au milieu des années 80, il rejoint la compagnie Cinema City pour laquelle il va diriger plusieurs succès du box-office : Happy Ghost 3, Eight Happiness, All About Ah Long.
Au début des années 90, il s'associe avec le réalisateur Ching Siu-ting (Histoires de Fantômes Chinois) et signe plusieurs films d'arts martiaux fantastiques.
Il crée alors sa propre compagnie, la Milkyway Image où il réalise/produit ses "classiques".
Leur réalisme cru impose un nouveau ton au polar "made in HongKong " Johnnie To devient le capitaine du bateau cinéma hongkongais En 1999, il signe successivement Running Out Of Times et The Mission. Leur présentation au festival de Berlin propulse Johnnie To dans la sphère de la cinéphilie internationale, bien que ses œuvres précédentes aient été présentées dans des festivals spécialisés comme Udine ou Fantasia.
A Hong Kong, le fait majeur est l'immense succès de Running Out of Time, qui met face à face Lau Ching wan, l'acteur fétiche de To et Andy Lau. Il annonce la couleur : dans une logique purement commerciale, il veut offrir au public de Hong Kong saturé de produits hollywoodiens ce qu'il souhaite voir.
